Students in criminal justice study the causes of crime, law in society, and the workings of the criminal justice
system, including police, courts, and the corrections system. The degrees in criminal justice are offered through
the School of Public and Environmental Affairs.
Special Opportunities
Students are encouraged to complete internships as an integral part of their education in criminal justice. Majors
can also join the Criminal Justice Association at IU South Bend, which offers opportunities to hear speakers,
participate in community events related to the field, and attend conferences.
Careers
Students graduating with a degree in criminal justice are prepared for careers in law enforcement at the local,
state, and federal levels, as well as positions in the justice system and the rapidly growing area of private
security. Graduates can be found working in the social welfare field, in business, and in regulatory agencies such as
the Environmental Protection Agency and Occupational Health and Safety Administration, among other areas.
